2020 Angelo Aglianico

Release Date : 1st October 2021

Over the years we have been on the hunt for another red varietal that could match the quality of Mataro, Grenache and Shiraz in the Barossa Valley. After drinking some wonderful sulphur free examples from Italy, we settled on planting Aglianico. The grape has probably exceeded our expectations, and the late ripening at lower alcohol and high natural acid has given us a strong point of difference from the other wines we make.

From ancient Greece to southern Italy to the Barossa, Aglianico is a little-known variety with a very long history. This is the 6th release of Angelo and it is fast gaining recognition and respect from a loyal band of adventurous drinkers that are keen to discover new flavours and textures.

The Wine

2020 Izway Angelo Aglianico

A combination of consistent, dry wind along with dry soils, led to extremely low yields in 2020. What started as a hot summer changed to a cooler than average February and March. The lower yields resulted in deep, rich colours, fine tannins and high tone aromatics, and the cold nights meant that the wines have purity, freshness, and great acid balance.

The 2020 Angelo is a stunning wine that is as vibrant, energetic and alive as the best of Spring. It has the hallmark tannin and acid profile of Aglianico that differentiates it from our other styles, but also has a depth and richness of texture that previous vintages have not displayed. This plushness provides a striking balance to the mouthfeel and exemplifies the reasons why we love making and drinking Aglianico. Savoury spice and leather flow into red cherry and orange rind, with hints of clove and cinnamon. The texture is coating and powerful, yet elegant, satiating, and moreish, and has all the elements of a wine that will continue to fascinate for at least the next decade.

The smooth texture on the palate and balanced acidity makes this wine a prime candidate for wine and food pairings. This wine will certainly please lovers of Italian varieties.
